I was 14 years old getting ready to go to a friends house doing a quick check in the mirror to realize a new zit was appearing. In a moment of panic I grabbed my brothers Clearasil and put it on the zit hoping and praying it would take care of the issue before I arrived at my friends.
I continued to get ready and eventually headed out the door. On the way, I did a final check in the overhead mirror and noticed the zit was less noticeable but in it’s place was a red blotchy spot! Noooooooo!!! I’d had an allergic reaction my brother’s face cream.
I didn’t give my reaction to the product much thought at the time. I mean I was 14 years old, I was more concerned about what I looked like and people were going to think about my zit and now blotchy face than the fact that a product caused this to happen.
When I was 26 and doing my best to eat healthy I started eating leaner meats, usually having chicken most nights for dinner. Soon after my breasts were extremely sore all the time and it wasn’t even close to that time of the month and being pregnant wasn’t a possibility. After talking with others and research I realized that all the chicken I was eating was full of hormones that was now affecting my body. I quickly cut down on my chicken consumption and started buying organic. The sore breasts went away and never came back.
It’s interesting how we don’t realize something is bad for us until it affects us directly and even then we don’t always notice or make a change immediately. My 14 year old self had more things to worry about but my 26 year old self was starting to wake up to the world around her.
Did you know
“The United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.”
“Over the past two decades, the European Union has banned more than 1,300 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date.”
“There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don’t have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry.”
If you did know that, you’re way ahead of me because I didn’t and I’m learning more and more about how harmful the products we use every day are to us.
Shortly after I made major lifestyle changes in the way of my eating and exercise habits I started making further changes in the products I use. Our house cleaning, laundry and most body care products come from The Honest Company. We get a package sent to us each month. A few months back I changed my face wash to 100% pure cleanser. My shampoo is natural and organic. Even I was surprised at the changes I had started to make. However, when you start to take care of yourself in one area it tends to eventually bleed into other areas.
So when I was approached recently through my blog page asking If I was interested in trying some body care products in exchange for an honest review. I was immediately on board because of the message the company has aligning with my life and things I’m into. Caitlin said I could be completely honest about the products, which is hands down most important to me.
Until Caitlin approached me I had never even heard of Beautycounter and I have my own MLM business so I was surprised this had never crossed my path before. That made me think it probably hadn’t crossed a lot of people’s paths either and I’m more than happy to be the guinea pig so others can learn more.
What is your current face care regimen? 100% pure eucalyptus cleanser, witch hazel toner and shea butter moisturizer morning and night. I try to do a Body Shop face mask once a week.
What products did you try? Charcoal cleansing bar, charcoal mask, nourishing cream cleanser, nourishing day cream, rejuvenating night cream, nourishing night cream, rejuvenating day cream, face oil, nourishing eye cream, rejuvenating eye cream, nourishing cream exfoliator and rejuvenating cleanser.
How long did you use them for? A total of 3 weeks. The first week was the rejuvenating line with exfoliator, charcoal cleansing bar and mask added into the mix. The second week was the nourishing line with exfoliator, charcoal cleansing bar and mask added into the mix. The last week was whatever I had left (didn’t want to waste it).
Which products did I like and why? Charcoal face mask is hands down my favorite product of all that I tried. I’m pretty sure this stuff is magic and I’m obsessed! I used this a total of 5 times and each time it left my face feeling like I just had a facial. I’ve been pretty lucky in the face department that although I break out occasionally and definitely around that time of the month for the most part i haven’t had an uncontrollable acne problem however my biggest issues has been blackheads. I’ve always noticed them and they’re my arch nemesis. This mask seemed to target those areas and not only clean them up but make them less noticeable.
The exfoliator had jojo beads in it so it felt like it was giving my face a good clean. It wasn’t rough or anything just had a different feel than the regular cleaner and I enjoyed it!
Both eye creams I felt made a difference (see the before and after photo) and I tend to neglect the eye area so I enjoyed giving it some focus.
The charcoal bar I only used as a face wash but It can also be used as a body wash. I liked the simplicity of it and that a little goes a long way. It has no scent but I felt like it did a good job of washing most of the make-up off my face at the end of the day.
Which products didn’t you like and why?
The cream cleanser had too much of a lotion feel to it and I just personally didn’t care for that.
The rejuvenating cleanser was fine but I didn’t like that it had no scent. I missed the eucalyptus of my 100% pure face wash. It left me feeling more refreshed after washing.
